Background

The UTAR Community and Voluntary Engagement (CARE) Programme (UTAR CARE Programme) is a structured grading system designed to encourage, cultivate, and recognise students’ contributions and efforts in community service and volunteering projects.

Objectives

The purpose of this system is to encourage the students to participant in Community Outreach Project / Voluntary Work. The increase in level of involvement in community service will have several positive outcomes such as positive changes in student behavior, values, degree aspirations and work preparation. Students who participate in these community service activities also show improvement in educational aspects as they learn to be more empathetic to others, improved self-positive attitudes and increased level of internalized moral standards.

1. Terms and Conditions of UTAR CARE

• The transcript is to record students’ contribution in community/volunteering project within their study period in UTAR which includes University Social Responsibility (USR)* projects, knowledge transfer program (KTP)**, student-initiated project and voluntary services to University***.

*USR is University Social Responsibility program or activity to benefit community or industry. Only programs initiated and driven by university will be take into consideration.

**KTP is knowledge transfer program which is derived from research projects to benefit community or industry.

***Voluntary services to the University are the activities that contribute meaningfully to the community, the public, or charitable causes, and must be officially endorsed by UTAR (departments / divisions / faculties / institutes / centres) or the CCO committee to qualify for CARE Hours.

• For student-initiated community project, students must obtain prior approval from the relevant faculty, centre, division or department and provide proof of participation with hours recorded.

• Students may participate in more than one community activity/CARE activity. However, students are only allowed to claim a maximum of 40 hours (or 5 days) for each community activity and a maximum of 8 hours per day.

• The total CARE Hours awarded for an activity may include actual service hours and preparation hours. Preparation hours shall not exceed 50% of the total actual service hours and shall be included within the maximum claimable hours per activity, not in addition to it.
